: Cities and towns across the idyllic island of Cyprus are readying for a flurry of nationwide celebratory activities to mark annual Carnival festivities across February and March.
While celebrations are held throughout the island, the coastal city of Limassol is a key port of call for visitors, hosting a range of events and activities across the ten-day period that kicks off on 28 February.
Attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year, Limassol’s streets come alive with an explosion of colour and aromas as Carnival parades, fancy-dress balls, food markets and parties entertain the whole family.
“Carnival is one of Cyprus’ most anticipated annual events, hosting numerous celebrations and events in key cities across the island, and nowhere do these celebrations come alive with more passion and colour than in Limassol,” said Christos Demetriou, Regional Office Director – GCC & Middle East, Deputy Ministry of Tourism, Cyprus, which is responsible for organising and promoting tourism within the Republic of Cyprus.
“Whether visiting the city for the first time, or as a return guest, Limassol is the destination to be during Carnival. The city provides a truly memorable experience that complements other cultural sights Cyprus has to offer,” added Demetriou.
Centred around Limassol’s Medieval Castle Square and other destinations across the city, Carnival celebrations begin on Thursday 28 February with Tsiknopempti, known as Smokey Thursday. Heralded as the BBQ night to mark all others, restaurants and taverns put on a delectable spread of grilled-themed menus.
Throughout the week, Carnival-goers take to the streets dressed in colourful costumes to perform shows across the city in the build-up to The Children’s Parade on Sunday 3 March and the Grand Carnival Parade on Sunday 10 March. Spectators can enjoy a colourfully decorated town centre and coastal promenade with organised precessions of dance groups and themed floats competing for Carnival titles and prizes.
